In today's rapidly advancing technological landscape, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Remote Sensing (RS) are evolving at an unprecedented pace. AI, driven by powerful machine learning and deep learning algorithms, enables efficient analysis of massive datasets and intelligent decision-making. Remote sensing, through satellites, aerial platforms, and other technologies, acquires diverse information about the Earth's surface, providing critical data for resource monitoring, environmental assessment, urban planning, and numerous other applications.
As both fields continue to develop, their integration has become increasingly prominent. AI brings novel methods and approaches to remote sensing data processing, significantly improving the accuracy and efficiency of image interpretation, enabling more precise identification of land cover types, and facilitating geographic information extraction. Meanwhile, remote sensing provides AI with rich real-world applications and vast amounts of authentic data, driving the optimization and refinement of AI models.
Against this backdrop, six scholars jointly initiated the Forum on Artificial Intelligence and Remote Sensing Science (AIRS) in 2024. The forum aims to establish an open and diverse platform, bringing together experts, researchers, and industry representatives from AI, remote sensing, and related fields to discuss cutting-edge technologies, share research findings, address practical problems, and advance the deep integration and innovative development of AI and remote sensing.
In 2024, the inaugural AIRS Forum Working Group meeting decided to hold annual AIRS Working Group meetings and academic symposia, and established the mission of AIRS based on the "5C Principles" and the AIRS slogan.
"Make Remote Sensing More Intelligent!"
